Life’s Roulette

Leandro Denderiarena was part of the casino history in the city of San Sebastián. He was a croupier at the Gran Casino Kursaal until the gaming prohibition in 1924, when the casino was forced to close its doors. In 1978 the roulette wheel spun again when the prohibition was cancelled, and the first thing the casino did was call Denderiarena back, because he was an ideal croupier, for his discretion, professionalism and honesty.

Denderiarena was the teacher for the new generation of croupiers for the re opened casino and was honored with the first spin of the new casino’s roulette. Almost 99% of the new croupiers were under his tutoring, and to each one of them he told the importance of “discretion, professionalism, honesty, amiability: being a gentleman”.

In May 1979, after teaching lessons to his pupils, and on his way home, Leandro Denderiarena suffered an accident at the casino doors that ended his life.
